Pre-Marital Screening Tests
Blood Group Typing
It is performed to detect a potential blood incompatibility between the parents and their future child. Blood incompatibility is related to the Rh factor in the blood. It can only occur when the mother is Rh-negative and the father is Rh-positive. Knowing whether such an incompatibility exists is important to take necessary precautions before or at the beginning of pregnancy.
Hemogram (Complete Blood Count)
Hemogram is used to investigate the presence of anemia.
Hepatitis B (HBsAg) Test
The Hepatitis B virus is investigated. Hepatitis B is a widely prevalent liver inflammation around the world. It is transmitted from person to person through blood, blood products, infected bodily fluids, and sexual contact. It is one of the diseases that can be prevented with vaccination and protective methods. If not monitored, it can lead to serious diseases such as cirrhosis or liver cancer.
Hepatitis C (Anti-HCV) Test
The Hepatitis C virus is investigated. Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is transmitted through blood. The main routes of transmission are through blood and sexual contact. If treatment for the virus is started promptly, various complications, including liver failure and cancer, can be prevented.
HIV Test
It investigates the presence of AIDS disease or carrier status. The HIV virus destroys the immune system, which enables the body to fight off infections. It can be transmitted through sexual contact, blood, bodily fluids, and from mother to child.
VDRL/RPR Test
This test is used for the diagnosis of syphilis (painless chancre). Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. If not properly treated, it can lead to very serious long-term complications. It is usually transmitted through sexual contact, but less commonly through blood transfusions, kissing, and other similar routes.
Hemoglobin Elektroforezi Test
This test is used for the diagnosis of Mediterranean anemia (thalassemia). Mediterranean anemia is an inherited blood disorder. Hemoglobin is a protein in the blood responsible for carrying oxygen. In individuals with Mediterranean anemia, there is a deficiency in the production of the beta-globin chains of hemoglobin. This condition is caused by the inheritance of the same gene from parents who carry this genetic disorder. The most common symptom observed is anemia.
SMA Screening Test
Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a muscle disease that affects the motor neurons in the anterior horn of the spinal cord, restricting movement ability. The SMA Screening Test has been added to pre-marital tests as of December 2021. The SMA Screening Test is conducted to determine whether couples carry a mutation that could cause SMA in their offspring. If both partners are carriers of SMA, they are referred for in vitro fertilization (IVF) when they wish to have children.
